Episode 47 – with Tom Victor

Start listening

Keitel and Yoni are joined by Tom Victor, writer and editor for the likes of BBC3, VICE, Planet Football, MEL Magazine and author of “What Would Jürgen Klopp Do?”, to chat about his career as a freelance writer and editor, as well as Tom’s beloved West Ham United.

Icebreaker:

Tom frequently posts images from his culinary exploits on Twitter and isn’t shy to share some of his favorite memes and screenshots from The Simpsons either; on that note, the guys name dishes and restaurants from the world of fiction that they wish they could try.

On Tom’s Work as a Freelance Football Writer and Editor:

Tom recalls the path that lead him to becoming a professional journalist and explains how it was that he came to find his own unique voice within the densely saturated market that is writing about football. When it comes to his work, rather than churning out transfer stories or tactical analysis pieces, Tom tends to tap into the more alternative tales that the beautiful game has to offer. The guys also get Tom’s thoughts on where to draw the line as far as over-scrutinizing the lives of footballers.

On Tom’s Book “What Would Jürgen Klopp Do?”: Life Lessons from a Champion:

Tom gives his insight into the mind of Jürgen Klopp and also shares why it was that he felt compelled to write a fictionalized narrative about one of the games most successful and enigmatic managers.

What Would Tom Victor Do?:

Based on the titles of each chapter in the book, Keitel and Yoni flip the script on Tom and pose him some personal questions.

Chapter 1. “The Most Important Thing”: What can you simply not live without?
Chapter 2. “Hugs and Handshakes”: Dead or alive, without literally exhuming a corpse who would you like to hug or shake their hand?
Chapter 3. “Mentality Monsters”: When it comes to work ethic, what’s your greatest strength?
Chapter 4. “For The Love of The Game”: What type of footballer are you?
Chapter 5. “I Like It Loud”: Can we press you for your top 3 favorite songs at the moment?
Chapter 6. “The Taste of Success”: What’s your most impressive dish to make and what are you having to drink with it?
Chapter 7. “Getting Your Vote”: Which current or former footballer would make a great politician, even a great Prime Minister?
Chapter 8. “A Hollywood Ending”: Who plays Tom Victor in a Hollywood blockbuster movie?

On West Ham United and their Recent Upturn in Fortunes:

The guys chat all things Hammers and in particular look at the reasons behind this current West Ham side’s success in this seasons Premier League. Beyond the matchday squad, they consider the role that the owners and manager David Moyes have played in turning the clubs fortunes around.

21st Century West Ham Flops XI:

In a somewhat ironic homage to the tribulations of West Ham United over the last couple of decades, the guys name a starting eleven of the most underwhelming and downright baffling signings to have worn the famous claret and blue.
